March Youth News

The young people of St. Andrew’s have had a busy past couple of months.  They went ice skating in Wilmington again, decorated the Parish Hall for the Mardi Gras pancake supper, and served pancakes there and cleaned up afterwards.  They raised $213.00 in donations from the pancake supper to go to Mourne Thomonde School near Cange, Haiti.  There is a poster in the Parish Hall describing the school and donations towards it are greatly appreciated.

This project (adopting Mourne Thomonde School) was initiated by Junior High Youth member Lucas Gomez.  He heard about the earthquake in Haiiti and knew that since many city schools had collapsed, children would be crowding the already strained rural and mountain schools as refugees.  He asked if Father John and I knew a deserving school in Haiti for which he could raise funds to help out.  Many in the St. Andrew’s group had visited the Thomonde School which has over 300 students (and many more now that the refugees arrived) and which was held outdoors under a thatched roof supported by thin poles.  Our group had wanted to help this school.

Lucas went on TV at Morehead Elementary and sent out letters to all the students describing the needs of the school and asking for support.  During the two weeks of Lucas’ project, over $1800.00 was raised.  So combined with the youth group donations, there is now over $2000.00 that has been raised for the school.  This money and any other donations towards it will be used to pay teachers, buy books, and start a building fund.   I am so proud of the helping spirit of our young people.  They are Christianity in action.

In addition to playing a lot of Four Square games, we’ve gone on a spiritual scavenger hunt on the beach, and played Apples to Apples, Bingo and Tabu.  We heard Molly Newbern and Ian Cader speak about their experiences on the Haiti Mission trip.  The Junior Youth group was supposed to have gone to Washington, DC last month but it was snowed out.  We’ll plan another overnight somewhere.  Lock-in plans are in the works for the Senior High.  We will also go bowling in March.

We would like to thank Lori Beth Sanborn for again providing a delicious home-cooked meal for EYC.  It was wonderful and we appreciate her great support of the young people.

Parent, please encourage your young person to attend EYC and please BRING them!  Juniors, 5th and 6th grades, meet from 4PM to 5:30PM, and Seniors, 7th grade and above, meet from 5PM to 6:30PM.  We share the 30 minutes for music and supper.  Although we love pizza and Dairy Queen, anyone willing to cook for us would be wonderful!

I welcome any suggestions and/or constructive feedback.                 Mary Withington   (726-5920)
